How to Wear a Bridal Birdcage VeilBrides love the style of a birdcage veil, but most have no idea how to wear it. First things first, what is a birdcage veil? A birdcage veil is a wedding veil style that is worn close to the bride's face. It is typically made of French netting or tulle attached to a hair comb to accommodate most any hairstyle. Birdcage Veils are an elegant and high fashion accessory for your modern couture wedding. A birdcage veil is a full veil that sits further back towards the crown of your head, or at an angle towards the side. It is roughly 12” to 18” from the comb to the edge of veil. Depending on where it is positioned, it offers more coverage than a Blusher Veil, and will frame your eyes and cheekbones. If a birdcage veil is positioned at the crown, it should fall roughly to the tip of your nose or your cheekbone. A charming and vintage escape from the traditional and contemporary Cathedral Veils which were often shoulder-length; birdcage veils exhibit sophistication and luxury, along with a playful touch. The 1950’s and 1960’s veils were all about simplicity and lace, along with precise length and needlework. Contrary to this, the modern caged veils are all about lux embellishments and unique shades. Also, these modern bridal, or party accessories, involve raw ends and are often made of tulle netting . Should you wear a birdcage veil throughout your entire day? That’s entirely up to you. Some brides opt to wear a traditional long veil for the ceremony and wear a birdcage veil for the reception. Others wear a birdcage veil for the ceremony, and remove the veil piece for the reception. And, of course, many brides wear the birdcage veil from the walk down the aisle to the last dance. It’s entirely up to you! Birdcage veils come in three main sizes: 1) Nine inch veils will cover your hair but not much of your face – they look very sweet placed at a bit of an angle. 2) The middle size (12 inches) is usually placed round about where you might place a headband, and will reach down to the tip of your nose. 3) Longer veils (usually around 18 inches) can cover your whole face. The veils can be worn in a variety of positions, but look best either to one side with the veil angled over your eye, or straight back. However, there are SO many variations. You could wear the lace as a bandeau, or attached to a Hat or Headband, or placed much further over to the side. You can also choose to accessorize your veil however you’d like. Fascinators and Hair Flowers are popular choices, as are pretty vintage Brooches or Hairclips. You can also get birdcage veils that have Swarovski crystals, pearls, feathers, etc. Of course, it depends on the style of your dress and your wedding, but the flexibility of the birdcage look is one reason why they have become so popular. You can wear birdcages with just about any hairstyle, although they are usually best suited to updos. Most veils only need securing from their main clip, but you can use hair pins if your hair is short or very fine, if you’re wearing it down, or if you want a particular shape. Bear in mind that while very close fitted veils are what you’ll mostly see in magazines, they can make it difficult to blink (especially with false lashes!). French netting comes in a limited set of colors, so you’ll probably be going for white or (if your dress is anything other than true diamond white) ivory. Just like a traditional veil, it doesn't need to match 100%, just be in the same color family & as close as possible. How to Wear a Birdcage Veil A birdcage veil can be worn in a variety of ways, depending on what feels most comfortable to you. If you’re wearing your hair down, simply slide the hair comb to position on the side of your head for an asymmetrical look. Or, slide the comb onto the top of your head for a fuller look. Wear a Birdcage Veil with Your Hair Down Wearing your hair down for your wedding or have long hair? Long hair has the most options with veils because any length and style will stay pinned and set throughout the busy and eventful day of the wedding. Don’t be discouraged if you want to wear your long hair down, and think birdcage veils are only for those women with short hair. You don’t have to give up the idea of a birdcage veil simply because you have long locks – you can have the best of both worlds. A birdcage veil looks great with long curls or loose waves. Wear a Birdcage Veil with Your Hair Up Wearing your hair up or have short hair? Women with short hair such as pixies or bobs love the birdcage veil. They are easy to pin down, which means women with short hair don’t have to worry about how they’re going to get a long veil to stay pinned with their pixies. With a few simple bobby pins you can pin down a birdcage veil, and compliment your shorter locks. There are lots of beautiful styles that will take your breath away, and add a touch of elegance to your special day that will be unforgettable!
