BONUS: FREE Printable Wedding Dress Planning Spreadsheet Congratulations, you're engaged! Get ready for the whirlwind of wedding planning and the excitement of making all the choices to make your day perfect! One of the most obvious of these is choosing your wedding dress and saying 'Yes to the Dress!' Below are 15 important things that every bride should know before buying their wedding gown, and why they might be important to you. 1. “Say Yes to the Dress” is not real life. There will not be a crowd of 12 hooting, hollering or hysterically happy-crying when you walk out in “the dress.” Most stores only let you bring two or three people to your appointment. 2. If you don’t wear strapless dresses in real life, don’t wear a strapless dress on your wedding day. Most of the wedding dresses you’ll look at will be strapless, which makes absolutely no sense when you think of how few real-life dresses are strapless. 3. Go to a store with an in-house seamstress or Splurge on a Good One! If the dress comes in and does not work on your body, you’ll want the store that sold you the dress to feel invested in the final result. Plus, in-house seamstresses are familiar with the dresses on their boutique’s racks, and know ahead of time what’s possible and what’s not. 4. Keep an Open Mind. 5. Consider Preowned. Seriously, most preowned dresses were only worn once for a few hours. 6. Don’t commit to a dress until you’ve set the date and picked your location. What you love might not fit with the season and venue you book. A heavy silk dress for a summer southern wedding? You’re going to sweat straight through! 7. If you buy a dress that you hate, don’t worry. You can always buy another one and resell the first dress online. Thank you eBay! 8. Don't feel pressured to buy the veil or accessories from the bridal salon. Shop around for accessories. Don’t feel pressured to grab something from the dress store just because it’s there. Or purchase from A Beautiful Bride Boutique! TIP: Keep a picture & a fabric swatch of your gown as you shop for your veil & accessories. Remember, there are over 200 shades of white. 9. If time allows, go to a store where you can actually walk through and touch dresses, feel fabrics, etc. 10. Trust your gut. You may be surprised to like a lot of dresses when on. And many of them might totally work. But there is *the one* that sticks in your head. Take a walk after trying dresses on to clear your head … and you will keep thinking and imagining yourself in the *the one*. It's subjective. You have to love it. 11. Eat a good meal before you go shopping. Even if you think you want to be as slender as you can be for the experience. If you get hungry, you will get cranky and that makes everything worse. You’ll become an emotional, indecisive mess on an empty stomach & nothing will look good to you. TIP: Keep a couple energy bars & OJ in your bag for a quick nibble. Even better yet…have a nice lunch out with your support team (Yes, you should treat) 12. Keep an eye out for sales at the store even after you buy the dress. Boutiques run sales on wedding dresses usually without notice. If you call they may honor the new sale price or put the difference towards another purchase or service. Cha-ching! 13. If your dress has sleeves, make sure you can lift your arms up. If not, on your wedding day you may not be able to hug your husband. 14. Don’t buy a smaller dress and put that pressure on yourself to lose weight before the big day. Seriously you don’t need the added stress. 15. Wear the same bra, slip & shoes to your fitting that you’ll wear on your wedding day. A tip from a seamstress to get that gown fitting just right. If you loved it when you bought it, don’t stress. As long as you were sure it was “the one” when you put it on, and it makes you feel beautiful and happy, then it will still make you feel that way when it’s time for you to actually wear it.
